Kitchen Vastu: planning around everyday use

Prepare a kitchen Vastu discussion around the full floor plan, cooking workflow, fixed fittings and practical changes you can safely reverse.

MANNGALAM editorial guide · Updated 11 October 2026

Vastu is part of India’s traditional architectural literature. This guide helps you prepare for a discussion; it is not a property diagnosis or a promise of particular results.

Record the existing kitchen before choosing a change

Mark the kitchen on the full property plan. Within it, show the stove, sink, refrigerator, worktop, storage, doors and windows. Record how north was established and which dimensions were measured. Include attached utility space if it affects access or storage. A stove photograph alone cannot establish the kitchen’s position in the home.

Separate fixed services from movable items. Gas connections, plumbing, extraction and electrical points are not interchangeable with a spice basket or shelf organiser. Tell the practitioner what the property owner permits and what your budget allows before discussing traditional directions or colour choices.

Follow the route of an ordinary meal

Walk through taking ingredients from storage, washing them, preparing them and cooking. Notice where two people get in each other’s way or where opening a cabinet blocks the route. Keep frequently used items accessible without crowding the cooking surface. A layout should suit the people who actually use it, including a shared household with different meal times.

Keep windows and existing ventilation openings usable, and follow the appliance manufacturer’s installation and clearance instructions. Do not cover vents or place decoration where it interferes with cooking equipment. For gas, electrical or ventilation alterations, use a suitably qualified professional rather than improvising a change to meet a direction preference.

Choose modest changes before replacing fittings

A useful first trial may be reorganising a drawer, moving a loose trolley or reducing items kept on the worktop. Change one arrangement at a time and check that doors and appliances still open properly. For colour, compare a removable sample with the existing cabinets, surfaces and light. Traditional associations can be discussed without replacing the whole kitchen.

In a rented property, agree any repainting or permanent work with the owner. Ask why a suggested Vastu adjustment relates to your plan and whether a simpler option is available. A general kitchen guide cannot diagnose a home or promise changes in health, family harmony or finances.

Prepare for a focused consultation

Ask what the review will include, how the recommendations will be shared and whether follow-up is available. Fees vary with location, property and the agreed scope; request a quotation and confirm the timing and format before booking. Share only the necessary property details through an agreed private channel.

Questions about this room

Do I need to move the stove for a Vastu review?

Do not begin by moving a connected appliance. Explain the current installation and ask what the review recommends within your constraints. Any approved gas or electrical change requires suitable professional input and must respect installation requirements.

Can I discuss kitchen colours without renovation?

Yes. Prepare photographs in ordinary lighting and identify removable accents that you are allowed to change. Ask whether the proposed colour is an optional traditional preference and compare a small sample before spending.
