Entrance Vastu: a welcoming, workable doorway

Review your main entrance with a marked floor plan, clear access and reversible choices before discussing traditional Vastu recommendations.

MANNGALAM editorial guide · Updated 11 October 2026

Vastu is part of India’s traditional architectural literature. This guide helps you prepare for a discussion; it is not a property diagnosis or a promise of particular results.

Identify the entrance you actually use

The building gate, apartment door and entrance to your own home may be different openings. Mark each on the full floor plan, then note which one the household normally uses. Include the corridor, stairs or shared lobby that leads to it. This gives a review more context than a close-up photograph of a door.

If you know the north reference, mark it and record how it was established. Distinguish the position of the door within the plan from the direction you face when walking out. Ask the practitioner which reference they need. The 16-zone circle teaches direction names; it cannot measure the entrance from a photograph or classify a property on its own.

Make arrival and movement comfortable

Open the door fully and check whether a shoe rack, chair, plant or hanging decoration obstructs it. Try the route while carrying an ordinary shopping bag. Leave access to the lock, doorbell and frequently used switches clear. A welcoming entrance should also work for children, older visitors and anyone using a mobility aid.

Choose lighting that makes the doorway and nameplate easy to see. Keep mats flat and stable, and avoid decorative objects that narrow the shared corridor. In an apartment, check building rules before placing anything outside your door. Practical access and security should remain part of any traditional Vastu discussion.

Try reversible changes first

Start by reorganising shoes, moving loose furniture or testing a removable decorative accent. Compare a small colour sample in daylight and evening light before committing to repainting. Note whether a suggestion is a traditional preference, a practical layout change or a personal design choice; they need not be treated as the same kind of recommendation.

For a rented home, obtain permission before drilling, attaching permanent fittings or repainting. Moving an entrance or altering a wall needs an appropriate building professional and any required permissions. A general doorway article is not a reason to begin demolition or purchase an expensive remedy.

Prepare for a focused consultation

Ask what the review will include, how the recommendations will be shared and whether follow-up is available. Fees vary with location, property and the agreed scope; request a quotation and confirm the timing and format before booking. Share only the necessary property details through an agreed private channel.

Questions about this room

Is every south-facing entrance a problem?

A direction label alone is not a review of the whole home. Ask how the entrance is being measured, which traditional approach is being used and how the recommendation relates to the actual plan. Avoid accepting a guaranteed outcome or an expensive alteration based only on a single label.

What can I do when I cannot move the door?

Explain that constraint at the start. Ask which movable, affordable options fit the agreed review and which recommendations are optional. Keep the current doorway usable and obtain permission for any permanent work.
